Radon Quick Facts

According to the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. You can’t see or smell radon. Testing is the only way to know your level of exposure.

  • Radon escapes from the soil to enter a house. The amount which enters a house depends on the weather, soil porosity, soil moisture, and the suction within the house. The amount of radon in the soil depends on soil chemistry which varies from one house to the next.

  • Levels can vary widely, even from home to home in the same neighborhood.

  • The EPA recommends that if you are buying a home or selling your home that you have it tested for radon.
